SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Drivers who sit in traffic along US-31 in Spanish Fort are being invited to weigh in on a plan to make the highway bigger.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on a proposed project to improve traffic flow and intersection capacity. The work would add lanes and change intersections along US-31 from US-90/US-98 to School Road, including improvements on US-31, US-90, US-98 and State Route 225.

“We want to hear from you,” ALDOT said in its notice, asking for comments, proposals and ideas as the project moves through design. The agency says public input will help it understand and address community needs as it develops plans.

What’s proposed

The proposed improvements include:

  • Adding through lanes to expand the roadway from four to six lanes.
  • Upgrading traffic signals.
  • Improving access management to help traffic move more safely and efficiently.
  • Adding sidewalks.
  • Incorporating other roadway and intersection safety features.

How to take part

ALDOT will host a public involvement meeting to share information, answer questions and receive comments:

  • Date: Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026
  • Time: 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Location: Spanish Fort Community Center, 7361 Spanish Fort Blvd., Spanish Fort

The session is open to residents, business owners and anyone else interested in the project. Those who cannot attend may submit comments to ALDOT, and all comments should be in by Dec. 10, 2026.

Mayor urges residents to attend

Spanish Fort Mayor Brad Bass said in a Facebook post that the project would ease congestion in the area.

“I strongly encourage our Spanish Fort residents to attend, review ALDOT’s proposed plans, speak directly with their engineers and provide feedback,” Bass said. “ALDOT wants to hear from the people who travel these roads every day … Improving traffic flow and transportation infrastructure remains one of our top priorities, and your participation is an important part of that process.”

Cost and timeline

ALDOT estimates the project will cost about $8.2 million. The plan is to begin construction between fall 2027 and spring 2028. Work is expected to take about 18 months, with completion in 2029.
