MOBILE, Ala. — Part of the Cochrane Causeway will close overnight this weekend so a contractor can replace an industrial pipe bridge that spans the road, the Alabama Department of Transportation said.

The closure of US-90 ALT will run 12 hours, from 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, until 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8. The work is being done by Oil Recovery Inc., a contractor for BWC Mobile Terminal, and involves replacing the northernmost industrial pipe bridge over the roadway.

Where the road will be closed

Crews will close the entire roadway to all traffic at the pipe bridge work area to give workers and equipment access. The closure will extend from perimeter closure points at the Bankhead Tunnel on the east side to US-43 on the west side.

Local traffic may travel beyond those perimeter points to reach nearby residences and businesses, but motorists cannot pass through the work area itself during construction. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed through.

Detours for trucks and hazmat

Commercial truck drivers and hazardous materials transport operators should plan ahead and follow the planned detours:

  • Standard commercial loads should use I-10 as the alternate route.
  • Hazardous transports and other permitted loads will use I-10, SR-59 and I-65 on a signed detour.
  • Eastbound I-10 hazmat and permit loads should take I-65 to SR-59 and back to I-10.
  • Westbound I-10 hazmat and permit loads should use Exit 44 (SR-59) north to I-65, then head south to return to I-10.
  • The Africatown Bridge and the US-90 causeway will not be available to hazmat transports during the 12-hour closure.

ALDOT asks motorists and commercial drivers to allow extra travel time and plan their routes accordingly.
