SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Bounce houses, food trucks and live music will share the spotlight with recycling bins on Saturday, Nov. 14, when the Baldwin County Solid Waste Disposal Authority celebrates America Recycles Day with a free community event at three recycling sites across the county.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to the public. No ticket or registration is required, and residents of all ages are welcome at any of the three participating locations.

Three places to celebrate

The main event will be held at the Baldwin County Recycling Center in Summerdale. Two CHaRM sites will also take part:

  • Main event: Baldwin County Recycling Center, 15101 Terra Bella Drive, Summerdale
  • Fairhope CHaRM: 20609 Bishop Road, Fairhope
  • Orange Beach CHaRM: 22510 Russian Road, Gulf Shores

Special giveaway items will be available at the participating CHaRM locations throughout the event.

What to expect

Organizers say the morning will feature:

  • Live music
  • Food trucks, food and drinks
  • Bounce houses
  • Kids’ activities
  • The Waste and Recycling Adventure Center
  • The Mobile Adventure exhibit

The Waste and Recycling Adventure Center and the Mobile Adventure exhibit give visitors a hands-on look at what happens to the things they throw away or put in a recycling bin. Educational displays like these are aimed especially at children, helping young visitors understand where trash goes, which materials can be recycled and why keeping recyclables out of landfills matters.

What is a CHaRM?

CHaRM is short for Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials. These drop-off sites are designed to accept items that typically cannot go into a household recycling bin or the regular trash, giving residents a responsible way to get rid of them.

Every recycling program sets its own list of accepted materials, and those lists can change. Residents who plan to bring items to a CHaRM site, whether during America Recycles Day or on another day, should check with the Baldwin County Solid Waste Disposal Authority for the current list of accepted items and any restrictions before loading up the car.

About America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is a national initiative held each year in mid-November that encourages communities to raise awareness of recycling. The national observance is promoted by Keep America Beautiful, and local governments, schools, businesses and community groups across the country hold events around it, from collection drives to educational programs.

Baldwin County’s celebration is part of that national effort. By pairing family-friendly attractions with a chance to learn about recycling, organizers aim to draw residents who might not otherwise visit a recycling facility.

Why recycling matters in a growing county

Baldwin County has been one of Alabama’s fastest-growing counties for years, and more residents and visitors mean more household waste. Recycling helps reduce the amount of material that ends up in landfills, which extends the life of those facilities and conserves raw materials that would otherwise have to be harvested or mined.

Recycling works best when materials are clean and sorted correctly. Items that do not belong in a recycling stream can contaminate loads, damage equipment or send otherwise recyclable material to the landfill. That is one reason education is a central part of events like America Recycles Day.

Simple ways to recycle better at home

  • Know your local rules. Accepted materials vary by program, so check the Solid Waste Disposal Authority’s guidelines rather than guessing.
  • Keep it clean. Rinse food and liquid out of containers before recycling them.
  • When in doubt, ask. Placing non-recyclable items in a recycling bin can contaminate an entire load.
  • Use drop-off sites for hard-to-recycle items. CHaRM locations exist for materials that do not belong in curbside bins or household trash.
