A Mobile County educator has picked up one of the top honors in her field. Marcee Hinds, who teaches at Baker High School, has been named the 2020 Alabama History Teacher of the Year.
The award comes from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to American history education in grades K-12.
A career built on history
Hinds holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of South Alabama, completed in 2011, and a master of liberal arts in history from Spring Hill College, earned in 2016. In 2019 she added the James Madison Fellowship and began pursuing a master’s in education with a concentration in constitutional studies.
In her Baker High classroom, Hinds pairs her interest in history with a strong embrace of technology. Rather than asking students to simply absorb dates and facts, she challenges them to examine the past analytically and form their own conclusions about why events unfolded the way they did.
