Downtown Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre will kick off its 2019 concert calendar with a double bill of rising country and roots-rock talent, as Brothers Osborne and The Wild Feathers are set to share the stage on Friday, Feb. 1. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the venue, located at 6 S. Joachim St.
The show marks the first stop of the year at the Saenger after the theater closed out 2018 with a run of high-profile acts, including GHOST, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen and Kansas. Organizers say the February concert is intended to set an ambitious tone for the year ahead, pairing an established Nashville act with a band that has already built a following in the region.
The Wild Feathers are no strangers to south Alabama audiences, having previously performed at the SouthSounds Music Festival. The group returns to Mobile in support of its latest release, “Greetings from the Neon Frontier,” an album that blends the loose, harmony-driven feel of 1970s West Coast rock with a modern alt-country sensibility and touches of indie rock. Fans of the band’s earlier work should find the new material familiar in spirit while still pushing into fresh sonic territory.
Brothers Osborne, the duo made up of brothers T.J. and John Osborne, will be making their first appearance in Mobile. The pair first broke through nationally with their 2016 debut album “Pawn Shop,” and have steadily built momentum since. Their follow-up record, “Port Saint Joe,” released last year, climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. Country albums chart and has been praised for its mix of radio-ready hooks and old-school vocal delivery.
Musically, Brothers Osborne draw on T.J. Osborne’s rich baritone and the pair’s soulful, old-fashioned twang, layering those traditional country elements over danceable, contemporary grooves. While some of their material edges toward mainstream country radio, the brothers have carved out a distinct identity that sets them apart from much of the current pop-country landscape.
