Downtown Mobile’s Soul Kitchen will host a night of high-energy jam music this Friday, July 28, when Tuscaloosa-based CBDB takes the stage alongside a rare live appearance from local group Cabbage. Doors open at 8 p.m. at the venue, located at 219 Dauphin St.

Cabbage is a side project featuring members of the well-known Mobile group Infant Richard & the Delta Stones, and Friday’s performance marks one of the band’s infrequent live outings. Fans of Infant Richard’s soulful, homegrown sound are expected to find plenty to enjoy in Cabbage’s music, which draws on many of the same local influences while carving out its own identity.
Headliner CBDB has built a reputation over more than a decade for a sound the band calls “joyfunk,” a genre-blending mix that pulls from funk, rock and improvisational jam traditions. The group got its start as a college-town bar band in Tuscaloosa before growing into a touring act that now plays festivals and music halls across the country.
While much of today’s jam rock scene leans heavily on electronic dance music influences, CBDB has carved out a niche by leaning into a more organic, band-driven sound that harkens back to earlier eras of the genre. Songs like “Old Dog” showcase the group’s Southern rock roots, while tracks such as “She’s So Mobile” reflect the exotic, exploratory textures that have become a hallmark of the band’s live shows.
That blend of styles has helped CBDB build a loyal and growing fan base over the years, with the band’s live performances known for lengthy improvisational jams that keep audiences engaged from the opening note to the encore.
