MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama freshman quarterback C.J. Bennett has been suspended for Saturday’s Wiregrass Classic against Edward Waters for a violation of team rules, head coach Joey Jones announced Friday.
Jones did not release details of the violation. Bennett will not play in the game.
Quarterback Depth Tested
The suspension comes as the Jaguars are already short-handed at quarterback. Bennett entered the 2010 season listed as the backup behind starter Myles Gibbon.
Gibbon left last week’s game against Nicholls State with a knee injury that is not considered serious. He is not expected to play against Edward Waters.
Sim Likely to Start
Brennan Sim took over after Gibbon’s exit and played most of the Nicholls State game. Sim is expected to make the start against Edward Waters in the Wiregrass Classic.
Second Season for the Jaguars
The 2010 season is the second for South Alabama football, which began play in 2009 under Jones. The Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
