Clarke County Holds Off Northview 38-34 With Goal-Line Interception After Tyson Phifer’s 4-TD Night
Clarke County intercepted a pass at its own 1-yard line with 31 seconds left to beat Northview 38-34, despite four touchdowns from Chiefs sophomore Tyson Phifer.
BRATT, Fla. — Clarke County holds off Northview 38-34 after the host Chiefs erased most of a 16-point halftime deficit and drove inside the 5-yard line in the final minute. The Bulldogs intercepted a pass at their own 1-yard line with 31 seconds left to seal the win and spoil Senior Night in Bratt.
Northview sophomore Tyson Phifer scored four touchdowns — two receiving and two rushing — to lead a furious second-half rally, but the Chiefs came up just short of completing the comeback.
An early hole for the Chiefs
Clarke County, the Grove Hill school from across the state line in Alabama, jumped out quickly and led by 14 points in the first quarter.
Northview got on the board when Judah Woodson scooped up a fumble and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-6 with 8:20 left in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, junior quarterback Tyler McAnnally found Phifer for a 40-yard touchdown pass, the first of Phifer’s four scores on the night. But the Bulldogs kept scoring, too, and took a 30-14 lead into halftime.
Tyson Phifer’s third-quarter surge
The third quarter belonged to Phifer. The sophomore scored three times in the period, running for touchdowns of 5 and 50 yards and catching an 87-yard touchdown pass from McAnnally.
That scoring burst brought Northview back within reach. Clarke County still held a 38-34 lead in the final two minutes, setting up a dramatic finish.
Phifer’s night by the numbers:
- 40-yard touchdown catch from Tyler McAnnally (second quarter)
- 5-yard touchdown run (third quarter)
- 50-yard touchdown run (third quarter)
- 87-yard touchdown catch from McAnnally (third quarter)
Onside kick, final drive and a goal-line pick
Trailing 38-34 with under two minutes to play, Northview needed the ball back. Jackson Helton delivered, recovering an onside kick to give the Chiefs one last possession.
Northview drove all the way to the Clarke County 4-yard line looking for the go-ahead touchdown. The Bulldogs’ defense held its ground, and Clarke County intercepted a pass at its own 1-yard line with 31 seconds remaining to end the threat and secure the victory.
About the two programs
Northview High School is in Bratt, a small community in northern Escambia County, Fla., near the Alabama state line, and competes under the Florida High School Athletic Association. Clarke County High School is in Grove Hill, the county seat of Clarke County, Ala., and competes in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Games between schools on opposite sides of the Alabama-Florida line are common in the region, where communities in north Escambia County, Fla., and southwest Alabama sit close together and often fill out their schedules with cross-state opponents.
For Northview, the game was also Senior Night, when the program honored its senior players and their families before kickoff.
What’s next
The loss dropped Northview to 5-4. The Chiefs will close their regular season on the road Wednesday night at Blountstown, which is 8-1.
