The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber has introduced a Workforce Resource Center, pulling short-form training programs for frontline employees, managers and executives into one place for member businesses.

The offerings are intended to be low- to no-cost as a benefit of chamber membership.

What’s Listed

Current trainings include:

  • A conflict workshop from Auburn University’s Technical Assistance Center
  • Coastal Alabama Community College classes on customer service and on food and beverage
  • Columbia Southern University’s Strategic Leadership Workshop

The center aggregates certificate-style trainings rather than delivering them directly — a curation function rather than a teaching one.

Why Aggregation Is the Useful Part

Training that a small business can actually use has to clear three hurdles: it must exist, the owner has to know it exists, and it has to be affordable.

Most communities already clear the first. The programs listed here are offered by an Auburn University center, a community college and a university — institutions that have been running workforce training for years. What has generally been missing is a single place where a restaurant owner or a shop manager can see all of it at once.

That is the gap a chamber is well positioned to close. It already has the membership list, and it already knows what its members are short of.

Who the Training Targets

The three tiers named — frontline employees, managers and executives — reflect different problems.

Customer service and food and beverage training addresses the coastal economy’s largest employment category, where turnover is high and the people in those roles are the entire customer experience for visitors.

A conflict workshop targets the supervisory layer, where most operational friction gets handled or does not.

A strategic leadership workshop is aimed at owners and executives whose businesses have grown past the point where they can be run by instinct.

A Membership Benefit

Offering the trainings at low or no cost to members changes the calculation for small employers, who typically treat professional development as a discretionary expense and cut it first.
