About the area
Michigan Avenue and South Juniper Street are city streets in Foley. The area includes homes, businesses and city streets that carry regular weekday traffic, including during the morning hours when the crash occurred.
Dirt bikes and the risk of head injuries
Dirt bikes are designed mainly for off-road riding, and riders have little protection in a fall. Head injuries are among the most serious risks, which is why safety experts strongly recommend that every rider wear a properly fitted helmet that meets federal safety standards, along with eye protection, gloves, boots and protective clothing.
Officials did not say whether the teen was wearing a helmet.
Many dirt bikes are not equipped or registered for use on public streets. In Alabama, motor vehicles operated on public roads, including motorcycles, must meet state requirements for registration, equipment and licensing, and Alabama law requires motorcycle riders on public roads to wear helmets.
Safety tips for families
- Always wear a helmet and protective gear, every ride.
- Ride only where it is legal and safe, such as designated off-road areas or private property with permission.
- Make sure the bike is the right size for the rider’s age, height and experience.
- Supervise young riders and consider rider safety training.
- Never ride on busy streets or in traffic on a bike not built and registered for road use.
