Daphne Police Charge Golf Cart Driver With DUI After Rollover at Lake Forest Golf Club Seriously Injures One

A golf cart rollover at Daphne's Lake Forest Golf Club on Saturday, Oct. 24, seriously injured one person and brought a medical helicopter to the scene. Police charged the driver, Monte Eugene Meyers, with driving under the influence.

DAPHNE, Ala. — A golf cart driver was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after a rollover crash at Lake Forest Golf Club in Daphne seriously injured one person on Saturday, Oct. 24, according to authorities.

Police identified the driver as Monte Eugene Meyers. He was charged with driving under the influence and taken to the Daphne Detention Center.

What happened

The Baldwin County 911 Center received a call Saturday reporting a golf cart rollover crash with injuries at the Lake Forest Golf Club. Dispatchers sent Daphne police and firefighters, along with an ambulance.

When emergency responders arrived, they found that one person had been seriously injured. Responders called for a medical helicopter to fly the injured person for treatment.

Officials did not identify the injured person, describe the nature of the injuries or say where the patient was taken. They also did not say how many people were on the golf cart, where on the property the crash happened or what caused the cart to overturn.

Police investigated the crash and determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol, leading to his arrest, authorities said.

The charge is an accusation. Meyers is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.

About Lake Forest

Lake Forest is a large residential community in Daphne built around a golf course and a lake, and golf carts are a familiar sight on its course and streets. The Lake Forest Golf Club serves residents and visiting golfers on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.

Golf carts and rollover danger

Golf carts can seem harmless because of their low speeds, but they can cause serious injuries in a crash. Most carts lack seat belts, doors and the safety structures found in cars, and riders can easily be thrown out during a sharp turn or on a slope.

Safety researchers have found that thousands of people across the United States are treated in emergency rooms each year for golf cart-related injuries, and that falls or ejections from carts are a leading cause of those injuries. Head injuries are a particular concern, because riders who are thrown from a cart often strike the ground or a hard surface.

Rollovers are more likely on hills, curves, uneven ground and wet grass, and when a cart is turned sharply at speed. Carrying more passengers than a cart is designed for can also make it less stable.

Impaired driving is dangerous in any vehicle

Alcohol slows reaction time, impairs judgment and coordination and makes it harder to judge speed and distance. Those effects do not go away simply because a vehicle is small or slow.

Safety advocates offer these tips for golf cart riders:

  • Do not drive a golf cart after drinking. Designate a sober driver or walk.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and slow down before turns, especially on slopes or wet grass.
  • Never carry more passengers than there are seats.
  • Keep arms and legs inside the cart while it is moving.
  • Do not let children drive, and make sure young passengers are seated and holding on.
  • Follow community and course rules for where carts are allowed to travel.

Investigation continues

Authorities have not released additional details about the crash or the condition of the injured person. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Daphne Police Department.
