Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a suspect accused of shooting a man during an altercation in the Vernant Park community, a rare burst of serious violence in the rural corner of the county.
Shots Fired on John Hall Lane
Deputies were called to a location on John Hall Lane at about 10 p.m. Wednesday after reports of shots fired, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office. Dispatchers relayed that the shooting had erupted during some kind of altercation, though authorities have not detailed what sparked it or how many people were involved.
“Upon arrival, deputies immediately rendered aid to the injured individual, secured the scene, and detained the suspected shooter without incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
The wounded man had sustained gunshot wounds and was flown by helicopter to a local trauma center, where he was receiving treatment. Authorities have not released his name or an update on his condition.
First-Degree Assault Charge
The suspected shooter was arrested at the scene without further incident and booked on a first-degree assault charge — the felony Alabama prosecutors use when a person causes serious physical injury with a deadly weapon. A conviction can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
A sheriff’s office spokesperson did not respond to a request for the suspect’s name by time of publication, and investigators have not said what prompted the altercation or whether the men knew each other. Additional charges remain possible as the investigation continues.
An Unusual Call for the Area
The Vernant Park community, west of Bay Minette in northern Baldwin County, sees little violent crime compared with the county’s fast-growing corridors along the Eastern Shore and the beach highway. Sheriff’s officials said cases involving gunfire and serious injury draw additional investigative resources, including crime scene technicians and detectives who canvass rural neighborhoods for witnesses and surveillance video.
Deputies encouraged anyone who was in the area Wednesday night and saw or heard anything — vehicles leaving quickly, raised voices earlier in the evening, or a dispute that may have been brewing — to come forward, noting that even minor details can help establish the timeline of an altercation that ends with someone fighting for their life.
