Duck’s Diner in Orange Beach Named Alabama’s Most Famous Diner on National List

Duck's Diner, an Orange Beach breakfast favorite since 2001 with a second location in Gulf Shores, has been named the most famous diner in Alabama on a national state-by-state list.

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A breakfast spot that has been feeding beachgoers and year-round residents for a quarter century now carries a statewide title. Duck’s Diner in Orange Beach has been named the most famous diner in Alabama on a newly released national list that picks one standout diner in each of the 50 states.

The ranking, titled “the most famous diner in every state,” highlights restaurants that have held on through difficult times for the diner business. Alabama’s pick is a family-friendly, laid-back restaurant best known for big breakfast plates, Southern comfort food and an all-day breakfast menu served a short drive from the Gulf.

Why Duck’s Diner made the list

The list’s authors framed their picks against a sobering backdrop for the industry. “While diners are disappearing across America — due to rising rents and labor costs, declining profit margins, and changing customer habits — some have remained fixtures thanks to loyal locals, beloved menu items, and distinctive atmospheres,” the list said.

Duck’s Diner opened in 2001, which makes it young compared with some of the decades-old institutions that earned spots for other states. What it may lack in age, it makes up for with a following that includes both people who live along the coast and the vacationers who return to Orange Beach and Gulf Shores year after year.

“Duck’s Diner is a laid-back Alabama restaurant that’s become a go-to stop for locals and vacationers,” the list said. “The casual spot is best known for its hearty breakfast plates, Southern comfort food, and classic diner favorites like grits and French toast, served just minutes from the beach.”

What’s on the menu

Breakfast is the main event at Duck’s, and it is served all day. The menu is large and leans heavily on Southern flavors and Gulf Coast touches. Highlights include:

  • A wide selection of fully loaded omelets
  • Banana-stuffed French toast made with Gambino’s French bread
  • Creole shrimp and grit cakes
  • Grits and other classic diner breakfast staples

Lunch starts after 10:30 a.m. and adds a daily meat-and-three special, the Southern plate-lunch format in which diners choose one main dish and three sides. Mains on the special have included fried chicken, hamburger steak and pork chops. The lunch menu also offers burgers, sandwiches and salads for those who want something lighter before heading back to the sand.

The banana-stuffed French toast and the Creole shrimp and grit cakes are the kind of dishes that tie the diner to its location. Shrimp and grits has become one of the signature dishes of coastal Southern cooking, and New Orleans-style Creole seasoning is a familiar flavor all along the northern Gulf, from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle.

From one location to two

For more than two decades Duck’s Diner operated from Orange Beach. In 2024, the restaurant opened a second location in neighboring Gulf Shores, giving visitors on the west end of Pleasure Island another option for breakfast and lunch.

Both locations keep the same hours, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 1:15 p.m. every day of the week. That schedule fits the rhythm of a beach vacation: an early breakfast before claiming a spot on the sand, or a late breakfast and early lunch after a morning on the water.

Alabama’s pick among Southern neighbors

Duck’s Diner joins a list stocked with well-known regional names. Other restaurants recognized on the list include:

  • Georgia: The Dwarf House in Hapeville
  • Kentucky: Ramsey’s Diner in Lexington
  • Louisiana: The Camellia Grill in New Orleans
  • Mississippi: Ajax Diner in Oxford
  • North Carolina: Poole’s in Raleigh
  • South Carolina: Early Bird Diner in Charleston
  • Tennessee: Sunliner Diner in Pigeon Forge

Several of those names carry long histories. The Dwarf House in Hapeville, just south of Atlanta, is the restaurant where S. Truett Cathy got his start in the restaurant business before he founded Chick-fil-A. The Camellia Grill, on Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans, has been serving burgers, omelets and pie at its counter since the 1940s.

A Gulf Coast connection in Tennessee

The Tennessee pick has a local tie. Sunliner Diner, the 1950s-themed restaurant brand operated by Gulf Shores-based Hangout Hospitality Group, has locations in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Pigeon Forge. On this list, it was the Pigeon Forge restaurant that represented Tennessee.

Sunliner’s Gulf Shores location made its own headlines last month, when a separate national ranking built on reviews, ratings, social media activity and online search demand named it the most popular diner in America. Between the two lists, a pair of diners born on Pleasure Island are now drawing national attention in the same season.

Why rankings like this matter for beach businesses

National “best of” lists are built in different ways, from online review data to editors’ judgments, and they are not formal awards. But they travel widely on social media and in travel coverage, and they often send curious visitors to a restaurant’s door.

For Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, where tourism drives much of the local economy, that exposure can be meaningful for independent restaurants competing with national chains for vacation traffic. A diner with a quarter-century of history and a reputation built largely by word of mouth is the kind of place many visitors look for when they want a meal that feels local.

The recognition also lands as the coast continues to recover from Hurricane Isaias, which knocked out power and brought down trees across Baldwin County earlier this month. Coastal restaurants are counting on the fall season, with its festivals and milder weather, to keep visitors coming.
