Flora-Bama will host a celebration of life on Aug. 9 honoring co-owner Pat McClellan, who died at his home on July 22 following an illness. He was 77.
McClellan, a Minnesota native and U.S. Navy veteran, became part-owner of the iconic Florida-Alabama beach bar in 1984. During his tenure, he helped establish celebrated events including the Mullet Toss and the Polar Bear Dip, both of which have grown into signature Gulf Coast traditions drawing visitors from around the country. Regulars and first-time visitors alike continued to encounter him greeting guests at the bar over the decades that followed.
According to his obituary, “Pat’s life was shaped by family — both the one he was born into and the one he built.” His numerous roles included devoted husband, proud father, loving brother and marketing innovator. In recent years, he particularly cherished being called “Papa Pat” by his three young grandsons.
The Flora-Bama has stood along the Alabama-Florida state line near Orange Beach and Perdido Key since 1964, growing over six decades from a small package store and bar into one of the most recognizable beach bars on the Gulf Coast. McClellan joined the ownership group in the mid-1980s alongside Joseph Gilchrist, helping expand the bar’s live music offerings and community events into the traditions that continue to draw crowds today.
The celebration of life will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Flora-Bama. His funeral service will remain a private event for family.
