MOBILE, Ala. — Gulf Distributing Co., the Mobile-based beverage distributor that moved its operations into a restored downtown landmark last year, has been named the 2026 Wholesaler of the Year by a national trade publication that covers the North American beverage marketplace.
The company also earned a spot on the list of the Best Companies to Work for in Alabama for 2026, the third consecutive year it has received that recognition.
Wholesaler of the Year
According to the company, the trade publication selected Gulf Distributing for its strategic growth, its innovation and its investment in its people, all while honoring its history.
Wholesaler-of-the-year honors in the beverage industry recognize distributors that stand out among the many companies that sit between brewers and other beverage makers and the stores, bars and restaurants that sell their products. In the United States, most beer and many other alcoholic beverages move through a three-tier system, in which producers sell to licensed wholesalers, who in turn sell to licensed retailers. That makes distributors such as Gulf a central link in getting products onto shelves and into coolers.
Gulf Distributing describes itself as a family-driven company dating to 1973. As a total beverage distributor, it represents beer and beverage suppliers, ordering and warehousing their products, employing a sales and marketing team to build their brands and delivering to retail stores across a three-state territory, according to the company.
Best Companies to Work for in Alabama, three years running
The workplace honor comes from an annual program conducted in partnership with Best Companies Group, an independent research firm that runs best-places-to-work programs across the country.
The program surveys employees to gather their views on workplace culture and evaluates employers on their workplace practices, benefits and employee feedback. Because employee responses make up a significant part of the evaluation, the recognition reflects how a company’s own workers rate their experience, rather than only how management describes it.
Gulf Distributing has now been named to the Alabama list three years in a row.
A $60 million bet on downtown Mobile
Both awards follow one of the biggest investments in the company’s history. Last year, Gulf Distributing invested $60 million to renovate a historic downtown building into a 243,000-square-foot facility that it calls one of the most advanced beverage distribution centers in the country.
The building is the former Press-Register building at 401 N. Water St., long home to Mobile’s daily newspaper. Gulf announced in 2023 that it would relocate its operations from Moffett Road to downtown Mobile, and the company celebrated the grand opening of its new headquarters in October 2025.
The project gave new life to a large historic property in downtown Mobile, turning the former newspaper building into an active headquarters and distribution hub in an area city leaders have worked for years to revitalize.
Modern distribution centers in the beverage business rely heavily on technology, including warehouse management systems that track inventory, automated picking and loading and route planning software that helps trucks reach stores efficiently. Gulf has said its facilities are equipped with the latest technology.
Why it matters for Mobile
Distributors like Gulf are significant local employers. Their work requires warehouse staff, drivers, merchandisers, sales representatives and office employees, and their trucks serve grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants and bars throughout the region.
Recognition from both a national trade publication and a statewide employee-driven workplace program reflects attention on two fronts: how the company performs as a business and how it treats the people who work there.
For downtown Mobile, the honors also put a spotlight on one of the most visible recent investments in the city’s core. The restored Press-Register building now serves as a working headquarters for a company that is drawing national notice in its industry.
