FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Fairhope senior Gus Faulkner picked off two passes against rival Daphne, returning one 97 yards for a touchdown, and that performance in the Pirates’ 27-24 region-clinching win has earned him the Gus Faulkner Player of the Week honor sponsored by Rich’s Car Wash.

The Tulane commitment, who plays linebacker and safety, gave Fairhope an early lead on the Trojans’ first possession and later set up a field goal with his second interception. The Pirates went on to win the Class 6A, Region 1 championship on a touchdown pass with three seconds left on Friday, Oct. 23.

“I feel like big-time players make big-time plays in big games,” Faulkner said. “We went out there with a good attitude and a good mindset and we knew we were gonna go out there and execute.”

Two interceptions that shaped a title game

Daphne came into the game unbeaten in region play, and the winner of the matchup was guaranteed the Region 1 crown and the No. 1 seed in the Class 6A playoffs. Faulkner wasted little time making an impact.

On Daphne’s opening drive, he stepped in front of a pass and raced 97 yards the other way for a touchdown, putting Fairhope on the scoreboard first. His second interception came later and gave the Pirates’ offense a short field that led to a field goal — points that proved important in a game decided by three.

Fairhope head coach Caleb Ross said the early return swung the game’s momentum.

“The old saying is, your best player’s got to play the best in big games. Well, that’s what he did,” Ross said. “He’s played that way all year.”

Ross also praised the effort and energy Faulkner brings to the Fairhope defense every week.

“There’s a reason why that guy is going to play college football at Tulane,” Ross said. “So, proud of him, proud of our whole team. But man, Gus set the tone.”

The finish: Garner to Woodford

The Pirates needed more than one star to finish the job. Daphne took a 24-20 lead late in the fourth quarter, and Fairhope answered with a 12-play, 85-yard drive led by quarterback Trey Garner. The Pirates converted two long fourth downs on the march, and Garner found Hayden Woodford for a 15-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining.

The victory gave Fairhope its first region title since 2021 in Ross’ first season as head coach. It also kept the Jubilee Cup, the trophy that goes to the winner of the Eastern Shore rivalry, with the Pirates for a second consecutive season. Fairhope improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the region, and the team also earned the area’s Team of the Week honor.

Faulkner was quick to share the credit.

“All these guys, you know, it wasn’t just me,” Faulkner said. “Hayden Woodford, balled out, everybody had a night, and that’s just what big-time players do when they get that opportunity.”

Gus Faulkner Player of the Week: a leader by example

For Faulkner, leadership is built in the daily work his teammates see long before Friday night.

“You’ve got to show up every day. You can’t just do it on the days you feel like it,” Faulkner said. “You’ve got to put your head down, put your nose in the dirt, and just keep going and striving to do better every day.”

He said that responsibility includes pushing others and finding whatever way works to lead them.

“Be a silent leader, a loud leader, however you can lead,” Faulkner said. “You just got to be disciplined and show them what it means to be a Pirate.”

That approach has been important this season. Fairhope entered 2026 with a young defense that had to replace several key players, and coaches leaned on Faulkner, one of the team’s most experienced players, to anchor the unit.

A rivalry with history

Faulkner’s big night came in one of the oldest rivalries in Baldwin County. Daphne leads the all-time series 26-12, but Fairhope has owned the recent meetings, winning seven of the past 10, including the last two. Ross said after the game that he had not fully realized how much the matchup meant to his players until he saw their emotion when it was over.

From all-state junior to Tulane commitment

Faulkner arrived at his senior season with plenty of credentials. As a junior, he was named to the Class 7A all-state team after recording 121 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two pass breakups and an interception, according to recruiting coverage of his commitment. Fairhope has since moved to Class 6A under the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s current classification.

Listed at about 6-foot-2 and a little more than 200 pounds, Faulkner is a member of Tulane’s 2027 recruiting class, announced in June. He also held offers from Army, Navy, South Alabama, North Alabama, Austin Peay and Nicholls, and he visited Tulane, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and South Alabama before choosing the Green Wave. Recruiting analysts have suggested he could grow into a linebacker role at the college level.

Tulane, located in New Orleans, competes in the American Conference and has been one of the most successful Group of Five programs in recent seasons, giving Faulkner a short trip from the Eastern Shore to his future home.

Award presented by Rich’s Car Wash

Brooke Million O’Donnell of Rich’s Car Wash presented Faulkner with the Player of the Week award, recognizing what he has meant to the Pirates both on and off the field.

“He’s a great person on and off the field,” Million O’Donnell said. “He led the team to win the region championship against Daphne, which is a great rivalry here on the Eastern Shore.”

The Player of the Week award recognizes a standout high school football player from the Mobile and Baldwin County area each week of the season.

What’s next for Faulkner and Fairhope

Fairhope closes the regular season at home Friday, Oct. 30, against Vigor, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. The non-region game will not affect the Pirates’ seeding.

Because Class 6A expanded its playoff field this season, region champions such as Fairhope receive a first-round bye. The Pirates will be off the opening week of the postseason and will host a second-round game on Friday, Nov. 13.

All AHSAA football state championship games are scheduled for Dec. 1-5 at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the University of South Alabama campus in Mobile — a goal Faulkner and his teammates now have squarely in view.
