The inaugural Dauphin Island Native American Festival will take place Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the historic Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island.
The event celebrates the cultures that lived along the Alabama coastal region from the 1700s into the early 1800s. Programming includes live storytelling and hands-on demonstrations of Native American foodways, recreational activities and arts and crafts.
Admission covers both the festival and a tour of Fort Gaines: $6 for ages 5 to 12 and $12 for ages 13 and up. Advance tickets were available online, at the Dauphin Island Gallery or at Fort Gaines, with tickets also sold at the gate on the day of the event. The Dauphin Island Heritage and Arts Council organized the festival.
Organizers billed it as a fun and educational experience for the whole family, spotlighting the deep Indigenous history of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
