Mobile Man Charged With Murder After Shooting in Front of Child

James Bullard, April 15, 2015

Mobile police have arrested a 31-year-old man on murder and weapons charges after a woman was shot and killed in a vehicle with her young child inside earlier this week.

According to police, the shooting happened Monday night in front of a home on Pollard Lane after a confrontation between the two, who share a young child together. Officers say a car was struck by multiple gunshots while the child sat inside next to the woman. The boy was not physically harmed.

Police say the incident followed a separate collision minutes earlier, in which the woman’s vehicle struck another woman and a parked car nearby. That woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear life-threatening.

Officers responded to the shooting scene before 8 p.m. and took the suspect into custody without incident. He now faces charges of murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Court records reviewed by local media indicate the two had a lengthy history involving child support disputes dating back several years, along with earlier domestic violence-related charges against each of them that were later resolved or dismissed. Additional details on those older cases were not immediately available.

The suspect remained in custody at Mobile County Metro Jail as of Wednesday afternoon and was expected to appear before a district court judge for a bond hearing later in the week.

Mobile police say the investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact investigators.
