Murphy had not won a football game since the 2023 season. Sherman Williams had never won one as a head coach. On Friday night both streaks ended at once, as the Panthers beat Elberta 33-6 to snap a 24-game losing skid.
Williams entered the night 0-12. Murphy entered it with a drought stretching back three calendar years. Neither of those sentences is true anymore.
What 24 Games Actually Means
A 24-game losing streak is not a bad season. It is three of them, more or less, stacked end to end.
Consider the arithmetic from the players’ side. A senior on this Murphy roster arrived as a sophomore during the streak and had never experienced a Friday night that ended with a win. Every week of practice, every film session, every set of adjustments had been followed by the same result. Whatever a coaching staff says on a Monday becomes harder to say convincingly the twentieth time.
The broader numbers give the scale. Murphy has now lost 32 of its past 35 games. The Panthers had been outscored 76-40 across three games this season before Friday.
The win also delivered Murphy’s first victory in Class 5A, Region 1 play, moving the Panthers to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the region.
A First for the Head Coach, Too
Sherman Williams’ 0-12 start is its own story, and it converged with Murphy’s on the same night.
There is a particular difficulty to taking over a program in the middle of a losing streak. A new coach inherits not only a roster but a set of expectations that have been reinforced weekly, and the usual tools for changing a culture — demonstrating that the new approach works — require a result the team has not produced in years. The first win is the proof of concept, and until it arrives, everything is assertion.
Friday it arrived, by 27 points.
The Other Side of the Ledger
For Elberta, Friday extended a run that is now longer than the one Murphy just escaped.
The Warriors have lost 14 straight games and 28 of their past 29. They are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in region play, and have been outscored 184-20 across four games this season — an average margin of roughly 41 points per game, with 20 total points scored in four outings.
Elberta also just finished a stretch of four consecutive home games and now begins four straight on the road, starting at Theodore. Four home games producing zero wins, followed by a month away from home, is a difficult schedule shape for a team trying to find anything to build on.
The Rest of Week 4 Around the Coast
Murphy’s win was one of several results that reshaped the region races across Mobile and Baldwin counties.
Orange Beach 27, LeFlore 7. In a matchup of unbeaten teams, Orange Beach kept its record spotless on the Rattlers’ home field. The Makos are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 4A Region 1, in sole possession of first place. Williamson, which beat Pine Forest of Pensacola 19-18 on the road Thursday, sits second at 3-0 and 1-0. LeFlore fell to 3-1 and 1-1.
Saraland 59, Theodore 9. The Spartans bounced back from the previous week’s loss to Gulf Shores, which had ended a 41-game home winning streak, by starting a new one on the same field.
Gulf Shores 30, Blount 29 (OT). The Dolphins trailed for most of the night before winning in overtime to stay unbeaten.
Vigor 42, Citronelle 8. Vigor answered its upset loss to Orange Beach by routing a previously undefeated Citronelle team.
St. Paul’s 38, Glenwood 33 in Phenix City.

Scan that list and a pattern emerges. Satsuma beat B.C. Rain by one. Williamson beat Pine Forest by one. Foley beat Alma Bryant by two. Gulf Shores beat Blount by one in overtime. Daphne beat Baker by three. McGill-Toolen beat St. Michael by three on a field goal as time expired.
Six games decided by three points or fewer in a single week, across a region where several of those results directly affected region standings. Against that backdrop, Murphy’s 27-point margin stands out as much for its decisiveness as for what it ended.
What Comes Next
Murphy returns home next week to face Gulf Shores — a 4-0 team ranked in the top 10 — in another Class 5A Region 1 matchup. It is an immediate and steep test of whether Friday was a turning point or a single good night.
Elberta travels to Theodore, opening its four-game road stretch against a team coming off a 50-point loss of its own.
For Murphy, though, next week’s difficulty is beside the point tonight. A program that had gone three years without a win has one, a first-year head coach who had gone 0-12 is 1-12, and the arithmetic that had defined the last three seasons no longer applies.
