ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — A man whose name has appeared on the rosters of nearly every civic board this beach town has stood up over the past five years will be recognized this month for the quiet, cumulative work that rarely makes headlines.
The Orange Beach Makos Academics, Arts & Athletics Club, better known locally as MAAAC, has named Dr. Nelson Bauer its 2026 IMPACT Award recipient. The honor goes to individuals whose sustained service has left a lasting mark on the community, and Bauer’s record spans public safety, education, youth athletics and faith-based leadership.
Twenty-Three Years in the Fire Service
Bauer spent 23 years in the fire service, closing out that chapter as Orange Beach Deputy Fire Chief from 2023 to 2025. It is a stretch of time that covers the transformation of the Alabama coast from a seasonal beach community into a year-round city, and with it a fire department that has had to grow to match a permanent population, a tourist population that swells the town many times over each summer, and the recurring demands of hurricane season.
A Founding Voice on the New School Board
Perhaps his most consequential civic role came at the beginning of the Orange Beach City Schools system itself. Bauer was an inaugural member and vice president of the Orange Beach City School Board of Education, serving from 2022 to 2026 — the formative years in which a brand-new municipal school system had to hire administrators, set policy from scratch, adopt budgets and establish the academic identity that families in the city are now sending their children into.
He has also served on the Orange Beach Planning Commission from 2021 to 2025, returning to that body again in 2026, a seat that carries real weight in a city where development pressure along the Gulf and the Intracoastal Waterway is constant. Bauer additionally served on the Baldwin County Forensics Board from 2024 to 2026, and has been involved in Orange Beach Church leadership and finance committees since 2025.
The Friday Lunch Wave
His connection to local schools, though, runs through hallways more than boardrooms. Bauer became an inaugural member of the Orange Beach Elementary Dad Squad and showed up regularly for the Friday lunch wave from 2021 through 2024 — the sort of volunteer commitment measured in cafeteria trays rather than agenda items.
He assisted with middle school baseball in 2022 and has coached youth baseball, flag football, soccer and basketball throughout his time in the community, which means a substantial share of Orange Beach’s school-age children have at some point had Bauer on a sideline.
‘The Most Loyal, Thoughtful and Selfless Person She Knows’
Those who know Bauer best point to character rather than credentials. His wife, Abby, describes him as “the most loyal, thoughtful, and selfless person she knows.” The couple has two children, Baylee Grace and Will.
Gala Set for Aug. 15
Bauer will be honored at the MAAAC Gala 2026 on Saturday, Aug. 15, in Orange Beach. All proceeds from the gala go directly toward supporting K-12 students in Orange Beach City Schools, funding programs, teachers and resources across the system.
