MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile and Baldwin counties’ representation in the Alabama Legislature changed little Tuesday, though several new members won seats, according to unofficial returns from the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office.

Most seats were uncontested

Only six of the 20 seats in the local delegation had general-election challenges. Fourteen lawmakers ran unopposed: Vivian Figures, Rusty Glover, David Sessions, Alan Baker, Napoleon Bracy, Chip Brown, Adline Clarke, Barbara Drummond, Jennifer Fidler, Donna Givens, Frances-Holk Jones, Mark Shirey, Shane Stringer and Margie Wilcox.

Glover is new to the Mobile County delegation after winning the Republican primary for Senate District 34 in May, and he faced no Democratic opponent Tuesday. He previously represented the district from 2006 to 2018. He joins Republican newcomers Danielle Duggar, John Knapp and Terry Waters as the delegation’s newest members.

New members

Duggar, who unseated Matt Simpson in the May primary, defeated Democrat Terri Osborne in House District 96 on the Eastern Shore. She received 11,483 votes to Osborne’s 6,389. South AL News has more in its report on Duggar’s win.

Waters ousted longtime state Sen. Greg Albritton in the primary and won Senate District 22, which includes parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties. He received 30,283 votes to Democrat Ashley Sharpe’s 11,400. See the full story on that race.

House District 65, which includes a small part of northern Baldwin County, will be represented by Knapp, who succeeds incumbent Brett Easterbrook. Knapp won 7,753 votes, and independent Elaine Beech won 6,375. South AL News covered the contest in its report on Knapp.

Incumbents who beat challengers

Three incumbents defended their seats. In House District 99, Rep. Sam Jones, D-Mobile, beat Republican Charlie Watts, 11,734 votes to 3,930. Read more in the story on Jones’ third term.

House Speaker Pro Tempore Chris Pringle, R-Mobile, won House District 101 with 8,129 votes over Democrat Joan Friedlander’s 5,646, as covered in this report.

Sen. Chris Elliott, R-Josephine, won Senate District 32, defeating Democrat Janet Appleby, 41,916 votes to 17,068.

All totals are unofficial until certified.
