CHATOM, Ala. — Brad Warrick, the winner of the Washington County sheriff’s race, says he plans to be a working sheriff who answers calls and stays involved when he takes office in January.

A homecoming

Warrick said the county is where he was born and raised, where his children attend school and where he began his law enforcement career. “This is where I was born and raised, this is where my kids go to school and where I started out in law enforcement,” he said. He has spent the better part of 20 years with the Greene County, Mississippi, Sheriff’s Office, so winning the Washington County race amounts to a homecoming.

“I’m humbled; I look forward to getting in here and making some positive changes and making it an even better sheriff’s office than it is now,” Warrick said.

Published reports on the race say Warrick received almost 70% of the vote in a three-man contest. Election results are unofficial until certified.

Following Richard Stringer

Richard Stringer has been Washington County sheriff for two decades, and he is retiring. Warrick considers him a mentor. “It’s going to be big shoes to fill. He thinks I can fill them; we’ll see. I’m going to give it my best,” Warrick said.

Priorities

Warrick said he will not be afraid to answer calls himself. “We are going to serve the people of Washington County. We are going to treat people with respect, and we are going to work on drug crimes, property crimes, and we want it to be where they call somebody, they get a deputy,” he said.

His stated main goal is keeping the county safe and moving forward. He takes office in January.
