The Public Relations Council of Alabama’s Mobile Chapter will devote its September luncheon to a subject the profession argues about constantly and formalizes rarely: ethics.

The luncheon is set for Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Bishop State Community College’s Southwest Campus on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile.

The Program

The presentation is titled “Ethics in Public Relations.” The event also includes networking with public relations and communications professionals over lunch.

Why the Topic Recurs

Public relations occupies an awkward position. Practitioners are advocates for a client or employer, and they are also, frequently, the source journalists and the public rely on for accurate information about that organization.

Those two roles do not always point the same direction. The questions that follow are practical rather than abstract: what to do when a client asks you to say something you know to be incomplete, how to handle a crisis in which full disclosure and legal exposure conflict, when undisclosed paid placement crosses a line, and what obligations attach to work produced with artificial intelligence.

Professional associations tend to address these through codes of conduct, which are only useful to the extent members have thought through how to apply them before the situation arrives. That is what a session like this one is for.

About PRCA

The Public Relations Council of Alabama is a statewide professional organization for public relations and communications practitioners, with chapters including the Mobile Chapter.

Monthly luncheons are the chapter’s principal programming, combining a professional development session with networking among people who, in a market the size of Mobile, regularly encounter one another on opposite sides of a story.
