ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Orange Beach is set to host one of the Gulf Coast’s most anticipated fall music events. The 2nd Annual Sounds of the Island Marching Band Festival will bring together student performers from across the region for a full day of marching band performances.
Cosmo’s Restaurant is presenting the festival for the second year in a row.
The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, at Orange Beach Middle and High School. Last year’s inaugural event drew strong attendance and community support, and organizers say this year’s lineup is even larger.
Who Is Competing
Twelve schools have registered for the 2026 festival, and more than 1,500 students are expected to take the field throughout the day.
The competing bands represent communities in Alabama and Florida, including:

- Robertsdale
- Foley
- Fairhope
- Saraland
- Satsuma
- Elberta
- Spanish Fort
- Geneva County
- Opp
- McGill-Toolen
- Orange Beach
The geographic spread is worth noting. Drawing bands from the Florida Panhandle, the Eastern Shore, Mobile County, south-central Alabama and the Wiregrass region in a festival’s second year indicates the event established itself quickly among band directors — a group that plans competition schedules well in advance and is selective about where they take a program.
What Is Actually Being Judged
The Marching Band Festival tests precision, musicality and coordination across the entire ensemble.
Marching band competition evaluates several things at once. Judges assess musical performance — intonation, balance, technique, phrasing — alongside visual performance, which covers marching technique, alignment, spacing and the coordination of movement with music. Many formats add general effect, which considers how well a program’s design and execution combine into a coherent show.
The difficulty is that these are evaluated simultaneously. A student is playing a wind instrument at a physically demanding level while moving in a precisely defined path relative to more than a hundred other people, all while staying in time with a drum major who may be a considerable distance away.
Months of Work in One Afternoon
The festival gives students the opportunity to showcase months of rehearsal and hard work. Events like this are an important part of the high school band experience for students throughout the region.
Competitive marching band programs typically begin work on a fall show during summer band camp, weeks before classes resume, and rehearse through the fall alongside their football game obligations. By late September a show is generally well developed but still being refined — which makes festival season the point at which programs find out how their work compares to everyone else’s.
A Large Crowd Expected
Fans, families and community members are encouraged to attend and cheer on the performers. The event is expected to draw a large crowd to the Orange Beach campus. Spectators will have the opportunity to watch multiple bands perform back-to-back throughout the day.
More than 1,500 performers brings a substantial audience with it — parents, siblings, extended family and band boosters travel with programs of this size. For Orange Beach, a Saturday festival of this scale in late September falls in the shoulder season, well past the summer peak, which is a favorable window for local restaurants and hotels.
The Home Band
Orange Beach Middle and High School’s own band program, known for its Mako pride, will also perform as part of the day’s lineup. The home crowd will have the chance to support their local student musicians alongside competitors from across the Gulf Coast.
