MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama baseball swept a two-game midweek series from Jacksonville State at Eddie Stanky Field, rallying for a 9-6 win Tuesday and holding on for a 6-5 victory Wednesday.
Seventh-Inning Rally Wins Opener
The Jaguars trailed the Gamecocks 6-2 through 5 1/2 innings on Tuesday before starting their comeback. South Alabama scored in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the deficit, then sent five runs across in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-6 lead.
South Alabama added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final 9-6.
Jaime Dennis earned his first win of the season with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out two. Kyle Bartsch recorded the final two outs for his 11th save of the season.
Jeff DeBlieux led South Alabama at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Big First Inning Holds Up Wednesday
South Alabama scored six runs in the first inning Wednesday and held on for a 6-5 win to complete the sweep.
Jacksonville State scored twice in the top of the second inning to make it 6-2 and added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly. The Gamecocks scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to pull within 6-5, but did not score again.
Tripp Cecil kept Jacksonville State off the board in relief, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, struck out three and walked one.
South Alabama plays its home games at Eddie Stanky Field and competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
