MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama baseball swept a four-game series from Brown University at Eddie Stanky Field over the weekend, while the Jaguars’ softball team won all four of its games at the 2015 Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C., giving the two programs a combined 8-0 record.
Baseball: Comeback Highlights Sweep of Brown
South Alabama won the series opener 9-7, then rallied from an eight-run deficit in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Brown led 10-2 before the Jaguars chipped away over the final six innings, scoring three runs in the ninth to force extra innings. Matt Bolger then delivered the game-winning hit to center field for a 13-12 victory.
The Jaguars won the second game Saturday 7-0, then completed the sweep Sunday with a 21-1 win.
South Alabama scored eight runs in the fifth inning Sunday on the way to its highest-scoring game since 2013, when the Jaguars set the program’s single-game record with 29 runs against New Orleans. Eight Jaguars had at least one hit. Freshman Jason Cryar, making his first collegiate start, went 5-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
South Alabama hosts Southern Miss on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Softball: Two Walk-Offs in Columbia
The softball team opened the Carolina Classic with a walk-off win over Charleston Southern. Chloe Rathburn’s double in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Kaleigh Todd from second base. Kalen McGill (6-0) earned the win.
On Saturday, South Alabama beat Tennessee State 6-3. The Jaguars scored three runs in the top of the first and built a 6-0 lead before their opponent scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Devin Brown (6-2) earned the win.
South Alabama added another walk-off win Sunday against Marshall, 5-3. Emily Messer singled up the middle to score Haleigh Lowe and tie the game, and Kristian Foster followed with a two-run home run to end it.
Softball: Jaguars Top South Carolina
South Alabama closed the tournament with a 4-1 win over host South Carolina. Rathburn doubled to left-center field in the first inning to score Messer and move Stephanie Pilkington to third. Blair Johnson grounded out to second base to bring in Pilkington, and Kaitlyn Griffith singled to right field to drive in Rathburn for a 3-0 lead.
The Gamecocks scored once in the bottom of the first. Messer’s single in the sixth inning scored Amanda Herron for the final margin.
The softball team is off this week before opening its Sun Belt Conference schedule Saturday with the first two games of a three-game home series against Louisiana-Lafayette.
