South Alabama Freshman Devin Brown Named Sun Belt Softball Pitcher of the Week for Second Time

South Alabama freshman Devin Brown earned her second Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week award of the season after a 2-0, 26-strikeout weekend.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama freshman pitcher Devin Brown has been named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.

The award is the third weekly Sun Belt honor for a South Alabama player in the last four voting periods.

Strong Weekend in Columbia

Brown went 2-0 with 26 strikeouts in 18 innings at the 2015 Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C., where the Jaguars won all four of their games. She earned wins over Tennessee State and host South Carolina, improving her record to 7-2.

In four appearances over the weekend, Brown allowed four earned runs on eight hits. She closed the tournament with back-to-back eight-strikeout outings on the final day against Marshall and South Carolina.

Season Numbers

Through the early part of the season, Brown has:

  • A 1.88 ERA with 18 earned runs allowed in 67 innings
  • 123 strikeouts
  • Two saves and two shutouts in 16 appearances
  • A .145 opponents’ batting average

She is tied for the Sun Belt lead in strikeouts and ranks among the top three in the conference in ERA, opposing batting average and wins.

Conference Play Begins Saturday

South Alabama opens its Sun Belt schedule this weekend at home with a three-game series against Louisiana-Lafayette. The series begins Saturday at noon at Jaguar Field on the South Alabama campus.

The Jaguars compete in the Sun Belt Conference under head coach Becky Clark.
