MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama softball freshman Devin Brown was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, earning the league’s first weekly pitching award of the 2015 season after her collegiate debut weekend.
Brown went 2-1 with 29 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings as the Jaguars opened the season at the Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Shutout in First Career Start
In her first collegiate start on Friday, Brown threw a one-hit shutout against Liberty as South Alabama won 8-0 in a game shortened by the run rule.
She also recorded her first career save against McNeese State. Brown entered in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and struck out both batters she faced to close out a 5-1 Jaguar victory.
On Sunday against Houston, Brown struck out 11 and allowed one earned run. South Alabama rallied from behind to win 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Opening Weekend Numbers
Over the weekend, Brown allowed three runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits and five walks. She leads the Jaguars with a 0.43 earned run average, and opponents batted .143 against her.
