HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Austin Roussel singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 17th inning, giving Southern Miss a 7-6 victory over South Alabama in a midweek baseball game that stretched more than twice the regulation length.
The Winning Run
Breck Kline started the decisive rally by drawing a one-out walk from South Alabama pitcher Justin Flores. Kline moved to third base when Tim Lynch singled to center field.
Roussel then chopped a 1-2 pitch toward first base. The ball bounced just beyond the reach of Flores, and Kline scored to end the game.
Jaguars Rally in the Eighth
South Alabama trailed 5-4 entering the top of the eighth inning before taking the lead. Cole Gleason and Adam Ballew opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Jared Barnes followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position with one out.
Garrett DeGallier then hit a ground ball to second base. The Southern Miss second baseman tried to cut down the runner at the plate, but the throw went wide of home, allowing both Gleason and Ballew to score. DeGallier reached on the fielder’s choice, and the Jaguars led 6-5.
The lead did not last. Southern Miss scored in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 6, and neither team scored again until the 17th.
Collura Leads at the Plate
Bud Collura led the South Alabama offense, going 3 for 6 with a triple, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
