HAMMOND, La. — Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Pat Cashman held South Alabama to two runs over six innings, and the Lions scored seven runs over the final two innings to beat the Jaguars 12-2 Tuesday night.
Cashman scattered seven hits. South Alabama fell to 22-12, while Southeastern Louisiana improved to 25-9.
Early Back-and-Forth
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when a batter tripled into the left-center field gap and scored one batter later on a fielding error at first base.
South Alabama tied it in the top of the second. Adam Ballew led off with a single to center and took second on a pickoff throwing error by Cashman. After Matt Bolger drew a two-out walk, Ballew moved to third on a wild pitch, and Garrett DeGallier lined a two-out RBI single to left-center to make it 1-1.
Southeastern Louisiana answered in the bottom half. Jaguars starter Ryne Long issued a two-out walk, and an infield single put two runners on before an RBI single to center gave the Lions a 2-1 lead. A two-run single to center later in the inning pushed the margin to 4-1.
Jaguars Threaten in Third
South Alabama loaded the bases with one out in the third. Jared Barnes singled, Bud Collura walked and Ballew singled to center. Danny Martinez’s sacrifice fly to left scored Barnes to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Jaguars could not get any closer.
The Lions restored their three-run lead with a run in the bottom of the third and then broke the game open with seven runs across the final two innings.
Up Next
Ballew reached base twice with two singles, and DeGallier drove in South Alabama’s first run.
