HAMMOND, La. — South Alabama baseball collected 21 hits Tuesday night and overcame five defensive errors to beat Southeastern Louisiana 13-7, handing the Lions their first home loss of the season.
The midweek road victory improved the Jaguars to 18-4 on the season under first-year head coach Mark Calvi.
Six Jaguars With Multiple Hits
South Alabama’s offense was spread throughout the lineup, with six players recording at least two hits.
Jordan Patterson led the attack, going 4-for-4 at the plate. Patterson doubled, homered, drove in four runs and scored three times.
Robby Campbell matched Patterson’s hit total, finishing 4-for-6 and setting a career high with three RBI. Nolan Earley added three hits in six at-bats, driving in four runs and scoring once.
- Jordan Patterson: 4-for-4, double, home run, 4 RBI, 3 runs
- Robby Campbell: 4-for-6, career-high 3 RBI
- Nolan Earley: 3-for-6, 4 RBI, 1 run
Bell Stays Unbeaten
Matt Bell earned the win on the mound and improved to 4-0 on the season. Bell allowed six hits, struck out two and walked three. All four runs charged against him while he was in the game were unearned.
The Jaguars committed five errors in the game, but the pitching staff limited the damage.
Calvi: ‘We’ll Take It and Move On’
Calvi credited his pitchers for the way they responded to the defensive miscues.
“We didn’t play solid defense behind Matt (Bell) tonight, but he was solid for us,” Calvi said. “The thing I was most impressed with was the way our guys on the mound handled adversity. They just kept going and didn’t shy away from it.”
“Who would ever think you could make five errors and win a ballgame,” Calvi said. “We swung the bats well. Southeastern Louisiana is a good club and was undefeated at home coming into this game. We feel fortunate to win, but we’ll take it and move on.”
