LAFAYETTE, La. — South Alabama men’s basketball plays at Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. Thursday in a Sun Belt Conference game featuring the league’s top two players in double-doubles.
The Jaguars are 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play, tied with Western Kentucky for second place in the Sun Belt’s East Division. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 6-11 overall and 2-4 in the league, fourth in the West Division.
The game will be broadcast on 105.5 WNSP.
Rubit’s Double-Double Streak
Augustine Rubit enters on a career-best streak of six consecutive double-doubles and has nine this season, which ranks eighth among Division I players. Louisiana-Lafayette’s Shawn Long has eight double-doubles.
Rubit has reached double figures in rebounds in seven straight games and in 10 of his last 11, surpassing his previous best streak of five consecutive games as a freshman. He ranks ninth nationally at 11.2 rebounds per game and second in the Sun Belt in scoring at 19.3 points per game.
Climbing the Record Book
Rubit needs five rebounds to pass Ed Rains for second place on South Alabama’s career rebounding list. With 1,078 career points, he has moved into 12th place in program history in scoring.
Ammons, Carter Contributing
Mychal Ammons led South Alabama with 15 points in Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee, the first time in five games that Rubit was not the team’s top scorer. Ammons leads the Sun Belt in 3-point accuracy at 48.6 percent and went 3-of-6 from long range against the Blue Raiders.
Javier Carter extended his streak of games with a blocked shot to eight with two blocks against Middle Tennessee. He ranks third in the conference at 2.2 blocks per game. In last season’s meeting with Louisiana-Lafayette, Carter had 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.
Cajuns’ Payton Leads League in Assists, Steals
Louisiana-Lafayette guard Elfrid Payton leads the Sun Belt in assists at 5.2 per game and in steals at 2.3 per game.
