South Alabama has suspended starting cornerback Damond Smith indefinitely, the school announced Friday, and the junior did not travel with the Jaguars for Saturday’s game against UTSA in San Antonio.
Head coach Joey Jones confirmed the suspension when contacted but offered no further comment, and no reason for the suspension was given.
Filling the Spot
Smith, who is listed at 6 feet and 185 pounds, was not with the team when the Jaguars left Mobile on Friday. Eddy Cabrera is listed next at the position on the South Alabama depth chart.
The Jaguars also have depth at safety, which gives the coaching staff the option of shifting a defensive back to cornerback to cover Smith’s absence.
The Game
South Alabama, 2-2, faces UTSA in its third consecutive road game and is looking to end a two-game losing streak. The Roadrunners are in their first season of football.
