South Alabama Places 10 Players on 2014 All-Sun Belt Football Teams

South Alabama placed six players on the All-Sun Belt second team and four on the honorable mention list, while tight end Braedon Bowman made the All-Newcomer team.

MOBILE, Ala. — Ten South Alabama football players earned All-Sun Belt Conference recognition when the league released its 2014 all-conference teams on Wednesday. The Jaguars placed six players on the second team and four more as honorable mention selections, though none were named to the first team.

Tight end Braedon Bowman was also chosen as South Alabama’s representative on the Sun Belt All-Newcomer team, which includes one player from each of the conference’s 11 schools.

Jaguars on the Second Team

Four of South Alabama’s six second-team picks came on defense, all of them seniors:

  • Ucambre Williams, offensive line, Sr.
  • Shavarez Smith, wide receiver, Sr.
  • Jerome McClain, defensive line, Sr.
  • Theo Rich, defensive line, Sr.
  • Maleki Harris, linebacker, Sr.
  • Terrell Brigham, defensive back, Sr.

Honorable Mention

  • Chris May, offensive line
  • Melvin Meggs, offensive line
  • Jesse Kelley, defensive line
  • Montell Garner, defensive back

Individual Awards

Louisiana-Lafayette sophomore running back Elijah McGuire was named Sun Belt Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. McGuire was also a first-team selection at running back and as the all-purpose player.

Texas State senior linebacker David Mayo earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Appalachian State quarterback Taylor Lamb was voted Freshman of the Year. Georgia Southern’s Willie Fritz was named Coach of the Year.
