Hueytown Receiver Cameron Broadnax Gives Verbal Commitment to South Alabama

Hueytown wide receiver Cameron Broadnax has verbally committed to South Alabama and plans to sign with the Jaguars in February.

MOBILE, Ala. — Hueytown High School wide receiver Cameron Broadnax has given South Alabama head coach Joey Jones a verbal commitment and plans to sign with the Jaguars in early February.

Broadnax is listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds. He runs the 40-yard dash in about 4.58 seconds and has a 34-inch vertical leap.

Offers and Decision

In addition to South Alabama, Broadnax held offers from Middle Tennessee State, Samford and UAB. He said he likes the Jaguars’ offensive approach and the fact that South Alabama is a young program on the rise, and he hopes to earn playing time early in his career.

High School Coach on Broadnax

Hueytown’s head coach praised Broadnax’s length, leaping ability and ball skills.

“The thing about Cam, he’s real long, he’s a full 6-3, and his leaping ability and his ball skills are phenomenal,” the coach said. “A lot of guys are super fast, but they may not have the ball skills to make those types of catches. He is a leaper. That’s his biggest strength – his body awareness and when he twists around he makes some phenomenal catches.”

“I told some guys, there’s nobody who runs routes better than he does or gets off the jam and has his kind of hands and ball skills,” the coach said. “Depending on how much depth they have there now, I believe he’s a guy who can plug in there pretty quickly.”

Signing Day Ahead

Verbal commitments are non-binding, and there is no early signing period for football recruits. Prospects may begin signing National Letters of Intent on Feb. 1.

South Alabama, which began playing football in 2009 under Jones, is preparing for its first season as a member of the Sun Belt Conference in 2012. The Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
