MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football returned to the practice field after a day off, moving into the second week of fall camp with work focused on correcting issues identified in Saturday’s preseason scrimmage and settling the competition at center.
The Jaguars are more than a week into preseason camp, and the session marked the start of another two-a-day practice day under head coach Joey Jones.
Practice Structure
The morning practice opened with individual and position drills. The offense then came together to work on running plays while the defense concentrated on pass pursuit.
Later in the session, the offensive and defensive units met for inside run drills and 7-on-7 skeleton passing work. Full-team drills followed, beginning with third-down situations.
The team period lasted roughly 40 minutes, with the offense running nearly 75 plays. The morning session as a whole ran about an hour and a half.
The coaching staff reviewed film from Saturday’s scrimmage before the practice and came in with specific goals aimed at correcting what it saw on tape.
Center Position Under Review
One area of focus is center. During Saturday’s scrimmage, several snaps went high, and at least one sailed over the head of quarterback Brandon Bridge.
Jones told AL.com that the staff has not settled on a starter at the position. He said the coaches want to name one but also want to develop depth.
Freshman Joseph Scelfo has performed well at center. Shaun Artz is moving back to guard and could be third in line at center.
Afternoon Session
The Jaguars were scheduled to return to the field in the afternoon for the second practice of the day, with an emphasis on special teams.
South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference and plays its home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
