Georgia Southern rushed for 304 yards and held South Alabama out of the end zone on Saturday, beating the Jaguars 24-9 in a Sun Belt Conference game.
South Alabama scored all of its points on three field goals. The loss left the Jaguars 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Sun Belt play.
Defense Shorthanded
The South Alabama defense, which entered the game with limited depth, lost Devon Earl early after he took a hard blind-side block. Several other Jaguars were shaken up at various points during the game.
Georgia Southern finished with 441 yards of total offense, 137 of them through the air. Despite the Eagles’ production on the ground, the Jaguars limited them to 24 points, compared with the 55-17 score when the teams met last season.
Roman Buchanan had a career game with 13 total tackles. After the game, Buchanan said, “There are no moral victories.”
Offense Held to Field Goals
Georgia Southern’s defense kept the South Alabama offense in check for most of the game. The Jaguars totaled 352 yards, but only 73 came on the ground.
South Alabama was driving late in the game with a chance to pull within one score, but a pass from quarterback Dallas Davis toward the right side of the end zone was intercepted. It was Davis’ first interception of the season.
