South Alabama Football Recruiting Class Ranks Third in Sun Belt in 247Sports Rankings

South Alabama's football recruiting class ranks third in the Sun Belt and 80th nationally in the 247Sports rankings, and Calhoun quarterback Taylor Lamb is a finalist for the AJC's Super 11.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama’s 2013 football recruiting class has appeared in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings, where the Jaguars sit third among Sun Belt Conference programs.

The ranking does not yet account for all of the Jaguars’ recent verbal commitments. South Alabama has received 14 verbal commitments, while the 247Sports database currently credits the Jaguars with eight.

Where the Jaguars Stand

Based on those eight commitments, South Alabama’s class ranks 80th nationally in the 247Sports team rankings. Six of the eight commitments listed are rated as three-star prospects, a total that ties the Jaguars with Florida International for the most three-star pledges in the Sun Belt.

Several established programs are ranked just ahead of the Jaguars nationally, including Tulsa at No. 77, Stanford at No. 78, Boise State at No. 75, Oregon at No. 72 and Arizona State at No. 70.

Because recruiting rankings weigh both the number and the ratings of committed players, South Alabama’s position could change once the rest of its pledges are entered into the database.

Lamb on AJC Watch List

One of South Alabama’s Georgia commitments has been included on a closely watched in-state list. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution annually names its “Super 11” top recruits from Georgia, and the newspaper has narrowed its 2012 candidate pool to 33 players.

Calhoun quarterback Taylor Lamb, a South Alabama commitment, is one of six quarterbacks among the 33 finalists. Lamb led the state of Georgia with 3,638 passing yards last season while guiding Calhoun to the Class AA state championship.

Georgia Pipeline

The Jaguars have drawn a number of their verbal commitments from Georgia, which has become a regular recruiting territory for head coach Joey Jones and his staff.

Verbal commitments are non-binding. Prospects may sign national letters of intent beginning on National Signing Day in February.

South Alabama plays its home football games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile and competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
