MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama Athletics announced two changes to the 2020 South Alabama football schedule on Thursday, moving up the season opener at Southern Miss and adding Tulane as a home opponent.
Southern Miss Opener Moves to Thursday
The Jaguars’ season opener against Southern Miss has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 3. The game, at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss., had been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5. Moving it to Thursday shifts the start of the Jaguars’ season up by two days.
Tulane Replaces Grambling
Tulane will travel to Mobile to fill the spot left by Grambling State, which had been scheduled to play South Alabama in the Jaguars’ home opener. That game was canceled after the Southwestern Athletic Conference announced it was postponing its football season to the spring.
South Alabama had attempted to schedule another Football Championship Subdivision opponent to replace Grambling, an FCS program, but was unable to find one to fill the open date before adding Tulane, a Football Bowl Subdivision program from the American Athletic Conference. Tulane is based in New Orleans, roughly 150 miles west of Mobile.
The 2020 season is South Alabama’s first in Hancock Whitney Stadium, the program’s new on-campus stadium, and its first under head coach Kane Wommack.
Attendance Not Yet Determined
South Alabama has not made an official announcement regarding attendance for the opener at Southern Miss or for home games this season. Schools across college football are weighing limits on crowd sizes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
