South Alabama Signs Ventura College Offensive Lineman Jon Griffin, 10th Junior College Recruit

Ventura College offensive lineman Jon Griffin has signed with South Alabama, becoming the 10th junior college player in the program's first recruiting class.

MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama football coach Joey Jones announced that offensive lineman Jon Griffin of Ventura College in Ventura, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Jaguars.

Griffin is the 10th junior college player to commit to the South Alabama football program, which is preparing for its first season of competition in the fall of 2009.

Griffin’s Background

As a freshman, Griffin was part of a Ventura team that won its conference championship and claimed the Southern California Bowl title.

This past season, Ventura finished 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the Western State Conference. Ventura’s offense averaged 350 yards of total offense and just under 29 points per game.

First Junior College Class

Griffin joins a group of nine other junior college signees who make up the first junior college recruiting class in program history: Heath Blount, Chris Brunson, Kevin Helms, Early James, Brian Krauskopf, Chris Payne, Steven Pease, Corey Pittman and Levi Slaydon.

All 10 players are scheduled to begin classes at South Alabama on Monday, Jan. 12, and will take part in spring practice, which is set to begin in February.

Building the Program

Jones is assembling the roster for a program that will play its first games in 2009 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The junior college signees, who arrive with college playing experience, will enroll in time to go through spring drills with the Jaguars before preseason camp opens later this year.
