MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama will open its 2013 football season against Southern Utah on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, according to reports.
The addition completes a 12-game schedule for head coach Joey Jones and the Jaguars. South Alabama needed a fifth non-conference game after Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic negotiated early departures from the Sun Belt Conference, effective this summer.
Six Home, Six Road
The 2013 schedule is split evenly, with six home games and six road games. South Alabama will play four Sun Belt games at home and three on the road.
The Jaguars’ Sun Belt opponents are Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State, Troy and Western Kentucky, along with newcomers Georgia State and Texas State.
Among the returning league members, South Alabama played Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State on the road last season and hosted Troy. The Jaguars did not play Western Kentucky in 2012.
The Sun Belt is expected to release its official 2013 schedule this spring, setting the dates and sites of each conference game.
Non-Conference Slate
Two of South Alabama’s five non-conference games are at home: Southern Utah on Aug. 29 and Kent State on Oct. 19.
The Jaguars will play three non-conference road games:
- Sept. 7 at Tulane
- Sept. 28 at Tennessee
- Nov. 16 at Navy
