MOBILE, Ala. — Running back Terrence Upshaw of Northview High School in Duluth, Ga., has given a verbal commitment to South Alabama following an official visit to the campus the weekend of Jan. 18, making Terrence Upshaw South Alabama’s latest addition ahead of National Signing Day.
Upshaw is 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds and is rated a two-star prospect by some recruiting services.
Record-Setting Production
Upshaw rushed for 1,267 yards and 27 touchdowns last season and totaled more than 1,600 yards of offense. He also caught two touchdown passes and scored on both a kickoff return and a punt return.
A two-time all-region selection, Upshaw set Northview’s single-season rushing record and single-season touchdown record and scored 45 touchdowns over two seasons. His high school coach called him “one of the most overlooked kids in our Metro Atlanta area.”
Why South Alabama
Upshaw held a scholarship offer from Vanderbilt. He said he was impressed by the South Alabama coaching staff and his visit to campus.
“I like that it is a new, upcoming program and I like what (head) coach (Joey) Jones is doing with the team,” Upshaw told AL.com. “They run the same offense that my high school does. Coach (Robert) Matthews (offensive coordinator) said I should be able to come in and play early.”
He also cited the university’s dormitories and football facility.
Signing Day Ahead
National Signing Day is Wednesday, Feb. 6. Verbal commitments are not binding until prospects sign national letters of intent. South Alabama competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
