MOBILE, Ala. — Six former UAB football players began classes at the University of South Alabama on Monday and are expected to take part in the Jaguars’ spring practice in the coming weeks.
The group includes quarterbacks Cody Clements and Austin Chipoletti, offensive linemen Lee Dufour and Cameron Blankenship, tight end Gerald Everett and wide receiver-running back D.J. Vinson.
Leaving UAB
UAB announced Dec. 2 that it was ending its football program. Players then began searching for schools where they could continue both their studies and their playing careers. The six who enrolled Monday were among a larger group of former Blazers who committed to South Alabama.
Linebacker Kalen Jackson, another former UAB player, had not enrolled at South Alabama as of Monday. Quarterback Evan Orth and wide receiver Josh Magee are expected to enroll this summer. Magee previously sat out a season after transferring from Alabama.
A Familiar Coach
The newcomers will reunite with Bryant Vincent, who left South Alabama to become UAB’s offensive coordinator and rejoined the Jaguars staff before South Alabama’s first bowl game. Vincent spent the previous three seasons as South Alabama’s quarterbacks coach.
First Day on Campus
The former Blazers were welcomed at the Jaguars’ 7 a.m. team meeting Monday before heading to their first classes at South Alabama.
South Alabama, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference under coach Joey Jones, played in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl in December, the program’s first bowl appearance. The Jaguars play their home games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
