South Alabama Launches “Get On Campus” Fundraising Campaign for On-Campus Football Stadium

South Alabama launched its “Get On Campus” fundraising campaign as part of a push to open an on-campus football stadium for the 2020 season.

MOBILE, Ala. — The University of South Alabama has launched a fundraising campaign called “Get On Campus” as part of its effort to build an on-campus football stadium in time for the 2020 season.

The university announced the campaign in conjunction with a meeting of its Board of Trustees. The announcement came a week after the Mobile City Council did not approve a proposed letter of intent with the university at its meeting.

Goal: Open for 2020

The campaign is part of a comprehensive plan to build the stadium on South Alabama’s campus. According to the university, the campaign will be evaluated continuously, and its progress will determine how quickly the next phases of construction move forward.

Erdmann: A Traditional Game Day

“Our students, fans, alumni and visiting fans deserve to be on our beautiful campus to enjoy a traditional college football game-day,” South Alabama Director of Athletics Joel Erdmann said. “Our team and those we host deserve to play in a modern stadium, which properly aligns us with those who compete at the elite level of the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and the College Football Playoff.”

Waldrop: No Tuition Dollars

University President Tony Waldrop said the school is committed to the project and to funding it without tuition.

“We are committed to having an on-campus football stadium at South, and we are committed to doing everything within our power to have that stadium open for the 2020 football season,” Waldrop said. “We also are committed to not using our students’ tuition dollars to build a stadium.”

Current Home

South Alabama has played its home football games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium since the program began play in 2009. The Jaguars, who compete in the Sun Belt Conference, open the 2018 season, their first under coach Steve Campbell, against Louisiana Tech at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
