College sports fans gathered at a university athletics event

South Alabama Jaguars Host Fan Day Ahead of Football Season

James Bullard, August 19, 2015

The University of South Alabama is inviting fans of all ages to the Mitchell Center for an afternoon fan day, giving supporters a chance to meet Jaguars athletes and coaches just weeks before the football program’s season opener.

The two-hour event brings together football players, coaches and student athletes from multiple Jaguars sports programs for a single afternoon of fan engagement, part of the athletic department’s effort to build excitement heading into the fall sports calendar.

Organizers built the event around frequent giveaways, with prizes distributed every few minutes throughout the afternoon to keep the crowd engaged. Fans can also expect photo opportunities with the program’s mascot and chances to collect autographs from athletes across several sports.

Parking is expected to be easy to find, with the Mitchell Center’s front lot and surrounding areas open to the public for the event. The university’s bookstore will also have Jaguars gear set up for fans looking to stock up on merchandise before the season begins.

The timing is deliberate. With South Alabama’s football season opener just under two weeks away, athletic department officials see the fan day as a way to build momentum and turnout ahead of the Jaguars’ first home games. University athletics have grown into a significant draw for the Mobile area since the football program’s launch, and events like this one are aimed at strengthening the connection between the team and the broader community.

The event is free and open to the public, with no ticket required to attend. University officials encourage fans planning to attend to arrive early for the best access to autograph lines and photo opportunities, given the range of activities packed into the two-hour window.

South Alabama athletics officials say fan engagement events like this one have become a regular part of the pre-season calendar, giving families and longtime supporters a low-cost way to connect with the program before ticketed games begin later in the fall.
