MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama has submitted a bid to host an NCAA softball regional and plans to submit a bid to host an NCAA baseball regional, athletic director Joel Erdmann said this week.
Erdmann made the announcement during an appearance on WNSP radio as both Jaguar programs head toward the final weeks of their regular seasons.
Top-16 Finish Key for Baseball
Erdmann said that if the baseball team finishes among the top 16 teams nationally, South Alabama should be in position to host a regional. The NCAA Division I baseball tournament opens with 16 four-team regionals, and host sites are typically awarded to the highest-rated teams in the field.
The Jaguar baseball team plays its home games at Eddie Stanky Field. South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference standings by two games after sweeping a weekend series against Louisiana-Monroe.
Projections Place a Regional in Mobile
SouthEasternBaseball.com’s latest postseason projections list South Alabama as a regional host, with South Florida, Mississippi State and Southern Miss assigned to the Mobile regional.
The projections also include three other Sun Belt teams in the NCAA field:
- Troy: No. 2 seed in the Florida State regional
- Florida Atlantic: No. 3 seed in the Vanderbilt regional in Nashville
- Louisiana-Lafayette: No. 2 seed in the LSU regional
Softball Bid Submitted
The softball bid has already been submitted to the NCAA. Regional hosts for both sports will be announced after the NCAA selection committees set their brackets at the end of the regular season and conference tournaments.
