MOBILE, Ala. — South Alabama softball was named the No. 13 national seed for the NCAA Division I Softball Championship and was selected to host a regional for the first time in program history.
The Jaguars will host Mississippi Valley State, Mississippi State and Florida State at Jaguar Field beginning Friday.
A Second Straight Automatic Bid
South Alabama (45-7) earned the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic berth by winning the league tournament for the second consecutive year. The Jaguars are coached by Becky Clark, who has led the program since its inception.
Last season, South Alabama made its first NCAA Tournament appearance and beat Georgia Tech twice at the Tuscaloosa Regional to reach the regional final, where it lost to host Alabama.
The Mobile Regional Field
- South Alabama (45-7), No. 13 national seed
- Florida State (41-16)
- Mississippi State (32-22)
- Mississippi Valley State (24-26)
South Alabama has already beaten two of the teams in the field this season. The Jaguars opened the 2013 season with a 3-2 win over Mississippi State and shut out Florida State 4-0 on April 10.
Schedule and Format
The double-elimination regional opens Friday with Mississippi State facing Florida State at 3:30 p.m., followed by South Alabama against Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m.
Friday’s winners meet in Saturday’s first game, and Friday’s losers play an elimination game. Saturday’s third game matches the loser of the winners’ bracket game against the winner of the elimination game. The winner of that game plays the winner of Saturday’s first game on Sunday, with a second game Sunday if needed.
All regional games will be streamed on ESPN3. The Mobile Regional is one of seven regionals that will be carried on an ESPN platform.
The Mobile Regional champion advances to a super regional against the winner of the Austin Regional, which includes No. 4 national seed Texas, Houston, South Carolina and Army.
