STARKVILLE, Miss. — South Alabama softball opened its 2013 season Thursday night with a 3-2 win over Mississippi State in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic.
Bulldogs Strike First
Mississippi State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when its third batter hit a two-run home run over the left-center field fence.
South Alabama did not have a hit against Mississippi State’s Alison Owen until the fourth inning. Brittany Fowler and Kaitlyn Griffith then hit back-to-back doubles, and Meghan Collins followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.
Johnson Provides the Difference
Designated player Blair Johnson hit her first collegiate home run over the right-center field fence to put the Jaguars ahead for good.
Hannah Campbell earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings. She allowed one hit and struck out four of the 10 batters she faced.

South Alabama (1-0), coached by Becky Clark, continues play in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic on Friday against SIU Edwardsville at 4 p.m. and Tennessee State at 7:30 p.m.
