MOBILE, Ala. — Senior outfielder Britany Campbell went 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs Thursday as No. 23 South Alabama swept a weather-delayed Sun Belt Conference doubleheader from Florida Atlantic at Jaguar Field.
The doubleheader was pushed back a day because of weather. South Alabama won the opener by run rule in five innings and took the second game 6-0.
Campbell also made two putouts in center field, including a leaping catch at the warning track that took away a deep drive.
Game 1: Eight Runs Early
Hannah Campbell induced the first of two double plays to end the top of the first inning, and the Jaguars scored three times in the bottom half. Blair Johnson doubled to left-center to drive in Emily Messer, Brittany Fowler singled up the middle to score Johnson, and Kaitlyn Griffith singled home Fowler for a 3-0 lead.
FAU went down in order in the second, and South Alabama added four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 7-0 lead. In the third, Britany Campbell doubled home Griffith, and Haley Fagan followed with a three-run home run after fouling a pitch off her knee earlier in the at-bat.
The Owls put two runners on with a double and a single in the fifth but did not score, and the game ended by run rule. It was South Alabama’s eighth run-rule victory of the season.
Hannah Campbell (14-7) pitched all five innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
Game 2: Beard Stays Perfect
Clara Bowen led off the third inning with a single and Britany Campbell followed with a single. Messer bunted both runners into scoring position, and Johnson singled through the left side to drive in both for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Bowen hit a two-run double off the top of the wall in right-center, and Britany Campbell capped a four-run inning with her fifth home run of the season for the 6-0 final.
Farish Beard improved to 14-0, allowing four hits and striking out five in five innings. Hannah Campbell retired all six batters she faced in the sixth and seventh innings for the save, lowering her ERA to 1.04.
