MOBILE, Ala. — Playing for the first time with a national ranking, No. 25 South Alabama shut out UAB 3-0 Wednesday night at Jaguar Field as Hannah Campbell scattered five hits and two Jaguars hit home runs.
South Alabama improved to 24-5 overall and 9-1 at home. UAB fell to 15-7. The Jaguars lead the all-time series with the Blazers 7-2.
Defense Holds Early
UAB put runners on early, collecting three hits and drawing two walks in the first two innings, but did not score. Right fielder Emily Messer kept the Blazers off the board by throwing out a runner at the plate.
Campbell (11-5) struck out seven for her fourth shutout of the season.
Home Runs Provide the Offense
Britany Campbell put South Alabama ahead with a solo home run to right-center field. Messer later doubled on a two-strike pitch and took third on a throw, and Blair Johnson followed with a two-run homer over the right-field wall, her third of the season.
UAB outhit South Alabama 5-4, but two of the Jaguars’ four hits cleared the fence.
UAB’s Leigh Streetman (7-4) took the loss after allowing three hits and three earned runs. Lannah Campbell, Hannah Campbell’s twin sister, threw three innings of relief for the Blazers and allowed one hit.
Clark: “We Got the Timely Hit”
“Overall, aside from the first inning, I thought it was a well-played game for us,” South Alabama coach Becky Clark said. “That was a big play by Messer in right field to keep them off the board. I thought Hannah had a great day. She pitched out of a couple of jams with runners in scoring position. Our defense was solid, and then we got the timely hit.”
“Britany and Blair really squared those balls up to get them out,” Clark said. “These kids work a tremendous amount in the (batting) cage.”
